About the Author
Steven Gambrel spent a lifetime as a minister. Then, one morning, his faith was simply… gone.
He describes the moment with stark honesty:
"I awoke one morning dreading going to church, suddenly realizing that I just didn't believe that stuff anymore. It wasn't my choice my faith was just... gone. I felt like Adam and Eve, cast out, not knowing where to go or what to do."
What followed was a five-year dark night of the soul, a painful and profound journey of rebuilding a faith that was honest, resilient, and real. Now retired, Steven is free to tell the truth about that spiritual journey. Through his writing and speaking, he hopes to offer healing to those traumatized by toxic religion and guidance for anyone navigating the wilderness of doubt.
His debut novel, The Beach, is a fictional exploration of his own experience—a blend of magical realism and raw emotional depth that resonates with anyone who has dared to ask the hard questions.
Sailing as a Spiritual Discipline
There is a unique clarity that comes from being on the water, alone with the wind and the waves. Sailing, for me, has become a spiritual discipline. It is an exercise in trust and surrender. You cannot control the wind, you can only adjust your sails. You learn to read the subtle shifts in the weather, to respect powers far greater than yourself, and to navigate by fixed points in a constantly moving world. It’s a potent metaphor for a reconstructed faith—one that is not about rigid control, but about skillful, attentive partnership with the mystery that moves us.
Hairy-eyed Heretic
A heretic is not someone who believes nothing, but someone who asks the questions no one else is willing to.
The Hairy-eyed Heretic is Steven Gambrel’s YouTube channel, a space for continued exploration beyond the pages of The Beach. It’s a place for honest conversations about faith, doubt, deconstruction, and the search for a spirituality that is intellectually sound, emotionally honest, and rooted in radical love. Join the conversation as we question certainty and embrace the beauty of an untidy faith.
